چکیده

[1] Long-standing simulation errors limit the utility of climate models. Overlooked are tropical-wide errors, with sea surface temperature (SST) biasing high or low across all the tropical ocean basins. Our analysis based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) multi-model ensembles shows that such SST biases can be classified into two types: one with a broad meridional structure and of the same sign across all basins that is highly correlated with the tropical mean; and one with large inter-model variability in the cold tongues of the equatorial Pacific and Atlantic. The first type can be traced back to biases in atmospheric simulations of cloud cover, with cloudy models biasing low in tropical-wide SST. The second type originates from the diversity among models in representing the thermocline depth; models with a deep thermocline feature a warm cold tongue on the equator. Implications for inter-model variability in precipitation climatology and SST threshold for convection are discussed. Citation: Li, G., and S.-P. Tropical Biases in Cmip5 Multi-model Ensemble: the Excessive Equatorial Pacific Cold Tongue and Double Itcz Problems

Errors of coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) limit their utility for climate prediction and projection. Origins of and feedback for tropical biases are investigated in the historical climate simulations of eighteen CGCMs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5), together with the available Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) simulations. Based on an in...

Dynamical Downscaling Projections of 21 st Century Atlantic Hurricane 1 Activity : CMIP 3 and CMIP 5 Model - based Scenarios

20 Twenty-first century projections of Atlantic climate change are downscaled to explore the 21 robustness of potential changes in hurricane activity. Multi-model ensembles using the 22 CMIP3/A1B (Late 21 st century) and CMIP5/RCP4.5 (Early and Late 21 st century) scenarios are 23 examined. Ten individual CMIP3 models are downscaled to assess the spread of results among 24 the CMIP3 (but not th...

Equatorial Atlantic variability and its relation to mean state biases in CMIP 5

2 ABSTRACT Coupled general circulation model (GCM) simulations participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) are analyzed with respect to their performance in the equatorial Atlantic. In terms of the mean state, 29 out of 33 models examined continue to suffer from serious biases including an annual mean zonal equatorial SST gradient whose sign is opposite to observa...

The relative roles of tropical and extratropical forcing on atmospheric variability

[1] A fast atmospheric General Circulation Model is used to generate three ensembles of atmospheric circulation. While the first ensemble is forced by global sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, the forcing is confined to the tropics and extratropics, respectively, in the other two ensembles. The tropical SST anomalies have the largest impact on atmospheric variability. However, also the ex...

We consider paradigms for interpretation and analysis of the CMIP3 en-2 semble of climate model simulations. The dominant paradigm in climate sci-3 ence, of an ensemble sampled from a distribution centred on the truth, is con-4 trasted with the paradigm of a statistically indistinguishable ensemble, which 5 has been more commonly adopted in other fields. This latter interpretation 6 (which give...
